Sustainability

Sustainability is important in food production. It has been Mummo’s mnemonic and the inscription on the wall plaque for decades.

The level of domestic origin of Mummo’s products is easy to remember: it is a neat 100 %. The potato is domestic and grown by a domestic farmer. The products are manufactured with domestic forces in a domestic company. Even the energy used in the production of the products is domestic. It comes from our own biogas plant, which is run with domestic expertise.

Why would I choose a domestic potato product?

Responsibility and consideration of the environment is one answer. The potato is a recommended raw ingredient in terms of all the most important currently measurable environmental impact categories. When building a balanced diet, the potato is a better carbohydrate source than rice and pasta. (Source: Finnish Food Authority / Quality potato as a lasting favorite on the dining table).

According to studies, the climate burden of potato production is significantly smaller than that of rice, pasta and instant noodles. When the combined effect of all greenhouse gases from production is taken into account as so-called carbon dioxide equivalents, producing one ton of rice burdens the atmosphere more than seven times compared to one ton of potatoes. The climate burden of pasta production is also more than five times that of potatoes.

Responsibly produced French fries — are there such?

Mummo’s French fries are a proven responsible choice. All of Mummo’s frozen potato products have passed a responsibility assessment carried out annually by a responsibility panel composed of independent experts. The responsibility assessment examines whether the product is a more sustainable choice compared to peers in the same product category or need. Mummo’s French fries have the right to use the Buy responsibly label.

Less fat does not mean less flavor.

Thanks to a unique production method, Mummo’s French fries contain only a drop of fat, which is a soft one. More precisely, heart-friendly rapeseed oil. There are absolutely no additives in Mummo’s French fries. Nor any added salt. The length of the ingredient list on a food package often indicates the amount of processing. Mummo’s French fries ingredient list: ”Finnish potato, vegetable oil”.

Sustainability is will and actions.

Approximately 40 million kilos of potatoes are processed and refined each year at Mummo’s factory. The production generates thousands of tonnes of nutrient-rich side streams that are utilized efficiently. The energy used in production comes from its own biogas plant. The amount of locally and responsibly produced energy corresponds to about 600,000 liters of fuel oil per year.

Food made by Mummo is an eco-friendly act on the plate.
